Mangawhai
09th Oct 2010
Round
2 of the Auckland club level series provided ideal conditions at
beautiful Mangawhai beach north of Auckland. 16 crews turned up ready
to brave the waves and put on an exciting spectacle for those on the
beach.
The
swells of up tp 4-5 feet provided for some huge air time especially
from the light wieght crews like CMC markets who were spending more
time in the air than the water until they ran into boat problems and
had to cut their day short. All the air time and wave punching
provided many opportunities for overtaking and positions changed every
lap while crew got used to the conditions. At the front of the field
the unstoppable team of Smuggler maintained their winning record
although Black Pepper stepped their game up yet another notch honing in
on the lightwieght crew and beating them in the final. The other
team to watch was Rohcon who nailed their starts and took some very
good lines keeping the presure on Blackpepper and trying to force the
mistake. With such precision racing it was Smuggler 1st, Blackpepper
2nd and Rohcon rounding out the podium in the end.
Mangawahai
served up the best conditions for racing along with the best spectating
of the season so far. It also provided crews with a taste of what
the National series has in store. The next Auckland club round is
Raglan by which time the new DC custom rigs will be on the water
competing so be sure to keep an eye out. |
